The Crossetrainer is divided into four zones indicated by color. When wrapped around the stick these colors correspond to various hand positions. There are certain fundamental ways to handle a lacrosse stick that maximizes effectiveness when executing lacrosse maneuvers. Picking up a ground ball for instance requires a player to place one hand at the bottom of the stick and one near the head. A coach or parent needs only to indicate that the black and grey sections should be held to best pick up a ground ball.

Zone stoppers made of soft Velcro sit between the various color zones. These allow players to recognize when they are shifting from one color zone to another without requiring them to look at the stick. Repetition and practice with proper instruction yield the best results.
